Steps to Become a CA in India

To become a Chartered Accountant (CA) in India, one has to follow a specific path as given by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). The path to becoming a CA in India can be broadly divided into three stages – Foundation, Intermediate, and Final. Let’s look at each level in detail:

Eligibility Criteria:

  • To pursue a CA course, you must complete your 10+2 education. Also, enrolling in the foundation course of the Chartered Accountancy program is the first step. After successful completion of the foundation, you can register for intermediate courses.
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in either commerce stream with an aggregate of 55% or other subjects with at least 60% aggregate.

CA Course Structure:

The CA program has three levels – foundation, intermediate, and final. Each level has different subjects and tests that you need to pass. A rigorous curriculum covering accounting, taxation, auditing, and business law.

1. CA Foundation:

The Foundation Course is the entry-level course to become a CA in India. Students who have completed 10th grade or equivalent can register for this course. The course lasts four months and is held twice a year – in May and November. The course covers topics such as Accounting, Mercantile Laws, General Economics, and Quantitative Aptitude.

3. CA Articleship Training:

After passing the intermediate level, aspiring CAs undergo a two-year practical training program called “articleship”. This practical experience is essential to developing practical skills and a quick understanding of conceptual knowledge. This is a mandatory requirement to become a CA in India. During the study period, students will gain practical experience in areas such as accounting, taxation, auditing, and finance.

After completion of articleship training, students can appear for CA Final Examination. The exam is conducted twice a year – in May and November. The CA Final Examination is a comprehensive examination covering all topics studied in the Foundation, Intermediate, and Final courses.

4. CA Final:
